Peter Warren, Percussionist & Band Leader 〰️

Peter Warren is a music producer, recording engineer, percussionist, and bandleader with over 40 years of professional drumming experience. Rooted in a deep reverence for global traditions, Peter has spent more than 30 years performing alongside master artists from West Africa, India, and Pakistan — developing a percussive style that is as rhythmically distinctive as it is culturally fluent.

Peter leads two world music projects that are the heart of his artistic vision. Makuru is a contemporary West African dance band drawing from the rich spiritual traditions of Guinea, Mali, and Senegal. The band features renowned Burkinabé singer, dancer, and Griot Mandjou Koné — a celebrated cultural ambassador who has shared the stage with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead — alongside top Bay Area world musicians. Makuru has also welcomed extraordinary special guests including Joan Baez and Miriam Diakite.

His second project, Raga Sun, is a high-energy Qawwali fusion ensemble rooted in Sufi spiritual music and woven through with classical Indian, ambient, and African grooves. Raga Sun is built around a long-term collaboration with two extraordinary artists: Riffat Sultana, daughter of the late maestro Ustad Salamat Ali Khan and heir to eleven generations of master vocalists from India and Pakistan, and Sukhawat Ali Khan, son of vocal legend Salamat Ali Khan. Together, they create music that is electric, soulful, and transcendent.

Peter's career has taken him to some of the most celebrated world music stages, including the Joshua Tree Music Festival, the Berkeley World Music Festival, the Sufi Weekend at the Omega Institute in New York, the Hillside Festival in Toronto, and the Kalani Center on the Big Island of Hawaii. He was also a founding member of Baraka Moon, the acclaimed Bay Area quartet blending Sufi trance, Indian raga, African rhythm, and Aboriginal didgeridoo.

Whether performing in an intimate venue or on a festival main stage, Peter Warren brings joyful, inclusive, high-energy music that celebrates humanity's ancient traditions — and invites every audience to dance.
